Question: Repairing A Croaky Plastic Tub?

September ane, 2009

Close up image of a plastic shower base with a crack in itThere'south no way to afford a new tub right at present. Does anyone know how to repair a plastic bathtub? I have a garden tub and the seat is cracked to the signal that unless I keep duct tape (the only thing to stay on more than a few days so far) over the crack, the tub leaks horribly. Cheers in advance.

I ran into this problem when I was renting a mobile home. I used Bondo. I call up thats how its spelled. Its the same product they use to repair fiber glass bodies on car. Instructions are on the tin and its not difficult to do.

You could try a epoxy adhesive. They are h2o proof. The best are two part adhesives. They are bachelor at Dwelling Depot and Lowes. You lot will find them in the paint department. read and follow directions.

Information technology depends on how big the crack is. 1 option (if information technology is a small scissure) is model glue (plant in the model toy department at box stores). This works by melding the plastic together.

If there are chunks missing out of it, there are a few options. Epoxy (already mentioned), h2o-proof caulk, and I also think in that location is a JB weld for plastics (found in most Ace Hardware stores).

Try going to a bathtub sales store and explicate your predicament to them. They don't bite! They will tell you what to use and how to practise it. Lowes and Home Hardware will probably be your best bets. Good luck. Take a picture show, if possible.

I proceed seeing Television receiver ads for something called Flex-Shot, which they merits seals even very large holes and lasts at least xxx years. While I have not tried information technology myself, it sounds similar it might piece of work for your problem. You could Google it to meet where to purchase it.

They also make a like product called Flex-Seal for lighter applications. Both are sprays that dry as solid rubber, and are used to repair many rubber and plastic objects.

If it is a hairline crack, you lot can use fiberglass filler. If it is deep, you may have to replace the tub.

If the crack isn't as well bad yous can try to get a fiberglass filler to put around the cleft to seal it. If the scissure is really bad you may have impairment under your tub and on your floor.

It might exist best to take this checked out because the floor can start to rot if there is a lot of h2o leaking from this crack.

Quite honestly, there is nothing around that house that is good to fix this kind of issue. Depending on what is going on, you take chances having water get into your flooring and walls if this is not fixed and that tin can cause expensive repairs.

This is i place not to be penny wise and pound foolish and have a plumber look at it and do a professional repair.

Bonding... it'southward not a pretty fix, but it'll fix information technology

Dec 22, 2022 1 found this helpful

How-do-you-do - yes, there is. We had a bad scissure in our showerpan, simply because nosotros just have a clamber-space nether that bath that no one always goes in, we were unaware of the damage. The water had leaked through and caused the floor joists to rot. My husband called a plumber, who 'painted on' this chimera-gum pinkish stuff that sealed the shower floor, giving united states of america time to save upwardly the coin for the expensive repair to re-tile the shower floor.

I bet a large-box home improvement store would take a permanent gear up (and something not and then pink!)

Question: Determining if Shower Pan is Croaky?

I really can't tell if it'southward croaky or non. I have tried looking with a flashlight merely no luck. So far the fix is to line the walls and floor or rip it out, but if information technology isn't actually croaky why do it?

It does audio as though you have a leak somewhere in that stall. Yous may want to cheque seams first equally you may find your leak is the caulked join where the pan meets the side-walls.

If information technology'southward not the seams, yous could try 'mapping' the leaking pan by pouring a pitcher full of Kool-Help or food colouring tinted h2o on the pan and looking for darker lines appearing on the pan floor every bit the tinted fluid seeps through the cracks.

I constitute a croaky pan that way by accident years ago when I tried to dye a pan past staining it deliberately with a pitcher of food colouring tinted water. It did give a lovely color to the pan merely those dark lines appeared and my then hubby said 'Holy moly, that pan is cracked and probably has been for years!' Nosotros ended up having to replace not simply the unabridged shower stall only most of the bathroom sub-flooring because oh yes, that leak had been at work for a very long time!

Using the 'mapping' method may cause staining and then be sure you are willing to put upwardly with that if you can't get the staining off. Bon Ami should get the colour off without scratching the pan surface but that's not guaranteed so be certain to employ a complementary color in instance y'all're stuck with information technology.
